Her whole word! Shakira is the proud mom of two sons — and she can’t help but gush about what it means to have her little ones by her side.
The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer became a mother for the first time in January 2013 when she and her then-partner Gerard Piqué welcomed their first child, son Milan. After adjusting to life with her newborn, Shakira opened up about how motherhood had changed her life for the better.
“When you have a baby, when you feel his love, you feel so at peace with the world. You just want to share the good news and share how happy you feel,” the “Whenever, Wherever” songstress told Latina Magazine in March 2014. “I have so many people out there that celebrate with me when they know that I’m happy. And they hate it when they know that I’m suffering because someone has hurt me.”
Two years after welcoming Milan, Shakira and the retired soccer player expanded their family for a second time. The “She Wolf” performer gave birth to son Sasha in January 2015.
Since the Colombia native became a parent of two boys, she’s documented their major milestones via social media. In a March 2016 interview with PopSugar, Shakira joked that she considered herself a “serial documenter” of her kids’ accomplishments.
“One of the most memorable moments with Milan was when he started being able to identify items on flashcards. We started when he was 6 months old and he caught on right away,” she gushed at the time. “With Sasha, I’ve found that he’s really musical and has an innate capacity for it; he even plays the drums! I’ve documented those moments and countless others. I’m a serial documenter.”
In June 2022, Shakira and Piqué announced that they had called it quits after 12 years of dating.
“We regret to confirm that we are separating,” the pair wrote in a joint statement to Reuters at the time. “For the wellbeing of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect their privacy.”
Two months later, the athlete was spotted packing on the PDA with model Clara Chia.
After news broke of the pair’s split, the “Can’t Remember to Forget You” performer opened up about how she and her boys were dealing with the tough transition.
“It’s been tough not only for me, but also for my kids,” she explained to Elle in September 2022. “[It’s] incredibly difficult. … I’ve tried to conceal the situation in front of my kids. I try to do it and to protect them, because that’s my number one mission in life. But then they hear things in school from their friends or they come across some disagreeable, unpleasant news online, and it just affects them, you know?”
