NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Defence has announced that Army Chief Gen. Manoj Pande is scheduled to embark on a two-day visit to Manipur from May 27 to 28, 2023. The primary objective of this visit, as stated in the statement, is to acquire a firsthand understanding of the prevailing situation on the ground.
During his visit, Gen. Pande will engage in meetings with ground commanders, including those from other forces, and conduct a comprehensive review of the law and order scenario.
The visit is in response to a requisition made by the State Administration on May 3, 2023, owing to the internal security situation in Manipur.
In a prompt response, the Army and Assam Rifles deployed 135 columns to effectively address the situation and ensure the safety of the people. Their measures included the evacuation of approximately 35,000 civilians to safe zones and the provision of immediate relief and humanitarian aid to the displaced individuals.
To discuss the current situation and chart the path towards restoring normalcy, General Pande is scheduled to meet with key figures in Manipur, including Governor Anusuiya Uikey, chief minister N Biren Singh, and chief security advisor Kuldiep Singh. These deliberations aim to facilitate collaborative efforts and effective strategies for bringing stability back to the region.
The ethnic clashes claimed over 70 lives and some 10,000 army and para-military personnel had to be deployed to bring back normalcy in the northeastern state.
