Gupshup brings UPI to feature phones

Conversational messaging platform Gupshup, has launched a native app, GSPay, to enable feature phone users make payments through the unified payments interface (UPI) platform. The app developed jointly with the National Payments Corp. of India (NPCI), uses SMS technology, eliminating the need for data or internet connectivity, as well as interactive voice response, or IVR-based payment systems.

Gupshup seeks to facilitate secure and seamless transactions for feature phone users by leveraging the power of UPI 123 Pay, the instant payment system which was launched by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the NPCI last year.

The GSPay app will be made accessible on the latest models of Nokia 105 and Nokia 106 4G feature phones, through a strategic partnership with HMD Global. These phones will offer QR code scanning capabilities, enabling users to make payments effortlessly.

“This innovative capability will bring the vast numbers of feature phone users into the digital and payments ecosystem. We’re glad to work with NPCI, Nokia and Airtel Payments Bank to make it a reality,» Beerud Sheth, chief executive officer and co-founder of Gupshup, said.

Sheth said initially 100,000 devices will be rolled out by HMD to facilitate the adoption of the UPI payments platform by feature phone customers.

“We expect it to then get to millions, but will of course take time as payments on feature phone is something new and will need awareness creation.»
