Ola Electric begins construction at its battery cell gigafactory: Watch video

Ola Electric CEO Bhavish Aggarwal has announced the commencement of construction at its battery cell gigafactory. Ola Electric battery cell gigafactory is located in Tamil Nadu’s Krishnagiri. It is touted to be one of the most advanced and biggest cell manufacturing facilities with a production capacity of 10 gigawatt-hours per annum.

Making the announcement in a Twitter post, Aggarwal writes “Work started and moving along at full speed on our cell gigafactory! It will be India’s biggest and amongst the worlds biggest cell factories. And the centrepiece for #endICEage!»

The upcoming Ola Electric factory will manufacture battery cells for electric vehicles (EVs) as well as other battery solutions. India does not have its own battery cell manufacturing facility. Locally producing battery cells will decrease the reliance on global suppliers and thus overcoming supply chain constraints.

The government is also pushing electric mobility in the country and has already announced incentives under the PLI scheme. Apart from Ola Electric, Reliance is also reportedly planning to set up a battery manufacturing factory in the country.

Meanwhile, Ola has announced to begin deliveries of Ola S1 Air from July this year.

Ola S1 Air was launched in the country last year. The electric scooter is the company’s most affordable e-scooter yet. It is offered in three different variants and comes with a starting price of 84,999 for the base model.

It is equipped with the company’s latest MoveOS 3 and is said to have a range of 76km. Buyers can choose from Coral Glam, Jet Black, Liquid Silver, Neo Mint, and Porcelain White colour variants of the electric scooter.

Ola S1 Air packs a 2.5KWh lithium-ion battery and takes about 4.5 hours to charge fully. The company claims that Ola S1 Air can jump from 0 to 40km in 4.3 seconds. It has a top speed of 85kmph. It is equipped with three different modes – Eco, Sport, and Reverse. It is said to have an IDC range of 100 km in Eco mode.
